Fashion Photography: the 6 categories

My article for MAXMAG.gr

Fashion Photography is the kind of photography used for promotional purposes either in printed advertising campaigns or online, in magazines and posters. It categorises it into 6 types. Fashion photography has developed its own aesthetics in which clothes and trends are enhanced by the presence of exotic locations or accessories. It was once a simple tool of marketing but it has now risen and is considered often like any other type of photography (food photography, landscape etc) as art, thus allowing many creative people to express themselves in a different way and use this way as to project something beyond a simple presentation of clothing pieces.

1. Editorials

When you open a magazine, editorials are all you see. Mainly, editorials sell a story or theme for trends, seasons, colors, folk culture, movies and art. It creates an immediate aesthetic suggestion, informs and advertises various brands or subject that the creative team had developed. It can be in a studio, or in any location, it can be simple and minimal or extreme and futuristic.

2. Catalog photography

This style is used by companies and brands that print to market their products to their consumers or buyers. This is primarily an information picture, where the model is mostly used as help and does not have such an important role, in order to create a specific base and highlight the clothes or accessories. Here, the style is free from problems and the background is usually monochrome. Studios are preferred for this type of photography as ideal locations are much harder to find.

3. High Fashion photography

Bigger brands often advertise their products using this photography style. Photos of this genre are generally capturing supermodels, famous actors and artists wearing the clothes. The clothes and accessories that are presented are often dreamlike very creative and special. The photographer and the stylist can be extravagan and over-the-top. All the elements of the model. clothes, style, hair, makeup, lighting, and location work together to create a flawless, high-fashion image.

4. Street Fashion Photography

It is the concept of capturing the essence of fashion on the streets for everyday people. What they wear, how they perceive their style and how they make a statement with their clothes. The photos of this style capture fashion out on the streets in everyday work, highlighting trends in the real world. It can also be a proposal or representation of street fashion by models wearing pieces (not of high fashion) generally of new designers that are not yet known. Smaller designers, means more affordable clothes and therefore easier to see around you.

5. Beauty Editorial Photography

This kind of fashion photography resembles portraits, more artistic or glamorous, very close to the face or from the shoulders and above. It's a perfect kind of photography to show off jewellery and accessories. They usually are sensational and try to cause a strong and direct feeling since there is nothing (eg, environment) that can support the photograph.

6. Online Content photography

It's not an official type of fashion photography yet, but with the ongoing upswing in social media, brands and fashion companies have to adjust and try to keep using them in their campaigns as best as they can. This means that they have to think about how they want to present something with the limitations of any social media. eg stories and posts have specific dimensions, size, duration of projection,

It is certain that as the seasons and requirements change the kinds of fashion photography are very likely to change characteristics again and again.
